Travel Guide to Zurich

Zurich’s Uniqueness

Zurich is a unique city. For one it is much cleaner than most. This may seem like an odd statement, but its true. You will be struck by the almost sterile like cleanliness of this metropolis. After getting over the initial shock that a city can be so clean, you will be pleased to find Zurich is brimming with character. There are all the modern amenities that most cities have like nightclubs, fine dining, and haute couture boutiques, but there is also a bustling old city where the past shines through in all its quaint and charming glory.

The closest large ski resort for short breaks in Zurich is Flumserberg, a setting popular with Zurich natives. The resort has a variety of runs, for beginners to experts, and offers an alpine garden, shops, restaurants and a night club.

Honeymooning In Zermatt

Honeymoon in Switzerland

Honeymoon Switzerland vacations

Article by Chris Morton

Zermatt, located in the southern part of Switzerland, sits at the base of the Matterhorn, known to generations of American Disneyland park patrons. The quiet mountain town of around 5500 permanent residents explodes in the winter as skiers and winter sports enthusiasts converge on the town, attracted by its mountain charm, excellent ski runs, and picturesque setting. The Alpine town is a perfect spot for a romantic honeymoon, in the winter and even during the summer months.

HistoryZermatt, named for the German ”zur matte” or ” in the meadow” was a sleeping agricultural town until the mid-1900s. The region’s potential for alpine sports was first “discovered” by British climber, Edward Whymper, who led the first successful expedition to the top of the Matterhorn.

Winter Sports at ZermattZermatt is surrounded by four, distinct ski areas – Sunnegga, Gornegrat, Klein Matterhorn, and Schwarzsee. In addition, there are connecting lifts to the Italian ski areas of Cervinia and Valtourneche. Zermatt offers visitors snow-covered peak, 365-days a year. The resort includes 132 ski runs, 76 percent of which are intermediate, 28 percent advanced, and 28 percent beginners. The facilities include more than 70 railways, chair lifts, and ski lifts, so there’s rarely any waiting.

In addition to the slopes, Zermatt features nine kilometers of Nordic ski trails, a natural and an artificial ice-skating rink, and a curling rink. One of the most popular non-downhill attractions is Gravity Park, located on the Matterhorn glacier. This attraction features a half pipe, jumps, and kickers for snowboarders.

The resort’s indoor facilities include an indoor climbing wall, a large fitness center, tennis courts, and a bowling alley.

In the SummerZermatt is just as lovely as it is in the winter. The towering Matterhorn looms over the mountainside town, in stark contrast to the bright azure sky. Summer attractions include hiking, climbing (both inside and out), and exploring the Swiss countryside.Attractions. In addition to the excellent skiing and other outside activities, Zermatt offers visitors a number of cultural attractions. Among the best of them are:

* Alpine Museum – located in the heart of Zermatt, this interactive museum houses the rope used in the first successful Matterhorn climb as well as a scale replica of 19th century Zermatt.

* The Matterhorn — More than just a ski run, the Matterhorn is a symbol of Switzerland. In addition to skiing the dramatic peak, visitors can take a funicular to points near the summit, and, of course, try their luck climbing “the horn” in the summer.

* The Zermatt Music Festival – This annual festival, held for three weeks each September, allows visitors to meet artists and musicians and hosts a variety of concerts and musical events. The 2006 festival included performances by members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.

Visiting Zermatt Zermatt is about a three hours drive from the airports in Geneva, Basel, Zurich, and Milan. The resort town also has its own heliport.

World First Double-Decker Cabrio Aerial Cable Car – Stanserhorn, Switzerland

World first Cabrio Aerial Cable Car

Aerial Cabrio Cable Airway to the top of Stanserhorn

Today, June 29th, 2012, the world first double-decker cabrio aerial cable car starts operation. And this famous Stanserhorn Cabrio Aerial Cable Car is already immortalized on a Swiss Post Stamp, as you can see in the above picture. The above photo of the Stanserhorn Cabrio Aerial Cable Car stamp is originally published at the attractive and great web site http://www.mountainstamp.com, a must for all mountain addicts! Stamp collectors and mountain lovers will be excited as they discover a whole new fascinating world at the mountain stamp website. I personally like that mountain stamp website that much that I put it to my favorites!

The ascent from the small village of Stans to the top of Stanserhorn is made by the original funicular and the world first Arial Double Decker Cabrio Cable Car in 25 minutes. On top of Stanserhorn a visit to the brand new revolving Restaurant is a must! From there it’s just a five minutes’ walk to the summit and its spectacular view! On a sunny day, and there are plenty of them in summer, the visitors can see as far as to the Black Forest in Germany, Alsace in France, the whole mountain panorama including Pilatus, Bernese Alps and the Lake of Lucerne.

History

The Stanserhorn funicular was opened in 1893. The original funicular track was divided into three sections and was altogether approximately four kilometers long. It was a real master piece built by the railway pioneers Franz Josef Bucher and Josef Durrer.

Funicular and old cable car from 1975

A lightning struck 1970 and caused a full fire that ruined the hotel and the funicular’s third section. This was the end of the three section funicular. Only the lower section remained, but the upper two funicular sections were closed and replaced with an aerial cable car in 1975. The Hotel was never rebuilt, but there is a Restaurant on its foundation.

The world first Double Decker Cabrio Aerial Cable Car

Today, the new Double Decker Cabrio Aerial Cable Car is transporting the first tourists to the Top of Stanserhorn. It’s a stunning experience to stay on the open upper deck and feel the wind in the hairs and the warm sunshine on the skin! Enjoying the great mountain and lakes panorama from there is a unique adventure! There is no other aerial cable car worldwide offering a similar open air ride! As there are not yet videos in English available, I show the following video about the new double decker cabrio aerial cable car with German comment:

Enjoy the freedom of the mountains without disturbing windows!

The 28 Million Swiss Franc Double Decker Cabrio Aerial Cable Car has four towers and 1’400 square meters of woodland had to be cleared. The ride lasts 6 minutes and 465 persons can be transported per hour.

This world first Cabrio Aerial Cable Car was constructed by the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group, the world leader in cable car engineering. Here is another video explaining how the cabin was transported and mounted:

Tip: Good Morning Ticket for all those who ride the funicular and the Double Decker Cabrio Aerial Cable Car before 09:15. The Good Morning Ticket is sold with a discount of CHF 10.- and on Top of Stanserhorn the Restaurant isn’t crowded at that time and you choose where you want to be seated. By the way: It’s a good idea to have breakfast on Top of Stanserhorn while enjoying the beautiful view!

Ski Chic In St. Moritz – Switzerland Vacations

Chic in St. Moritz

Chic Ragazza having snow fun in St. Moritz

Article by Eleanor Ramsay

Chic and fashionable St Moritz is the place to be seen on a luxury ski holiday. Probably the most famous of all the Swiss resorts St Moritz is set in the beautiful surroundings of the Upper Engadine valley and boasts 5 main resort areas; Corviglia, Corvatsch, Furtschellas, Diavolezza and Lagalb. Nestled 6,000 feet high in the Swiss Alps the town itself is split into two areas. Built on the side of the hillside is Dorf with elegant hotels and shops, whilst Bad is a quieter area up the valley from the lake.

There are an impressive 350km of pistes, 60 modern transportation facilities and runs at an altitude of 1800 to 3300 meters above sea level leaving you with stunning panoramic views. The resort has played host to the Olympics and the World Ski Championships offering skiers diversity, quality and quantity. The high quality ski area offers some extensive skiing. Advanced skiers can travel around to experience the best runs and there is some excellent off piste skiing to explore on the face of the Piz Noir as well as some challenging black runs at Diavolezza. Many of the pistes in St Moritz are for intermediates who can take full advantage of the terrain. Intermediates may wish to try long and open runs such as the Hahensee 6km which runs from Corvatsch through to St Moritz Bad. The nursery runs of Corviglia for beginners are accessible by funicular and run down to town. In addition Celerina provides broad slopes for some easy skiing. The lift system is extensive and getting around the resort is not a problem.

Due to its high altitude the climate of St Moritz is dry and crisp. The snow cover is reliable, and the sun shines here nearly all year round to make for ideal ski conditions.
