Part 1: Zurich Airport to Chur Switzerland

Train ride from Zurich to Chur leads from the Zurich urban area straight to the mountain area of the Canton of Grison. A Canton in Switzerland is a political unit similar to a State in the USA. The trains run on standard gauge tracks with an inner width of 1’435 mm or 4ft 8 1/2 in. The trains on this railroad line are run by SBB (Schweizerische Bundesbahnen, in English Swiss Federal Railway). The train rides through the City of Zurich, along the Lake of Zurich, Lake Walensee with the Churfirsten mountains and the “Bündner Herrschaft” to Chur.  Enjoy the ride!

 

 

Part 2: From Chur to Bergün Switzerland

From Chur to St. Moritz Ed Waldrup, a well known and welcome US tourist, was travelling with the RhB (Rhätische Bahn, in English “Rhaetian Railway”) on narrow gauge track. The tracks of RhB is a meter gauge track with an inner width of 1’000 mm or 3 ft 3 3/8 in like most mountain railways in Switzerland. Approximately 7% of the world’s railways use meter gauge tracks (Wikipedia). As the journey from Chur to St. Moritz is quite long and the scenery magnificent, it is split in two parts, parts 2 & 3. Part 2 is dedicated to the section from Chur to Bergün.

 

 

Part 3: From Bergün to St. Moritz Switzerland

UNESCO World Heritage “Rhaetian Railway in the Albula Landscapes”

The Albula line of the RhB (Rhaetian Railway) is a genuine treasure, that has been approved as part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscapes” in the month of  July 2008. This approval as UNESCO World Heritage includes not just the railroad, but also the neighbouring countryside. Landscape and railway blend into one another in a number of imosing and wide expanses man-made historic structures, all watchfully embedded to the really steeply-sloping and narrow Alpine valleys. Switzerland:Trams in Zurich, pt. 3

The bend we see is the one at Weinbergstrasse/Hardtstrasse, seen in the previous video from the outside. 2:03- Central – note that all traffic (tram, vehicular, pedestrian) in this junction is flowing without any traffic lights! 2:42- The double-articulated HESS SwissTrolley again :) 2:59- Farbhof, the buses/trolley buses have their stop in the middle of the reversing loop of the tram 3:30- A ride on the subway tram. On this stretch, the two directions switch places, so that the doors of the trams are on the proper side of the middle platforms. At Milchbuck one track goes above the other, on the other end of the tunnel the crossing is in level. If you don’t like to look at concrete tunnel walls, fast-forward to 4:45 :) 5:18- Switching

The “City Hotel” is situated, as the name implies, in downtown Zurich, Switzerland. The legendry Bahnhofstrasse, the finance and business district, main railway station and the airport terminal are situated just around the corner.

Bernina Express – A Scenic Railway Journey in the Alps

Bernina Express - A Scenic Railway Journey in the AlpsThe Bernina Express is a train that runs between Chur, Switzerland, and Tirano, Italy. Since the railway was built without using a tracking system, the cogwheel track used to handle steep sections, a number of extra loops and tunnels had to be created in order to artificially lengthen the track. The journey on the Bernina Express is a 4 hour train journey, 140 kilometres (87 miles) across 196 bridges, through 55 tunnels and across the Bernina Pass, the highest point at 2,253 metres (7510 feet)

The Bernina Express runs all year. It is run by Rhatische Bahn, its whole network uses the narrow gauge (1000 mm), rather than the standard gauge (1435 mm) used by the SBB. The Chur railway station is used by both companies, so you can take an SBB train from Zurich to Chur. Chur is a good place for the railway enthusiast, with many beautiful railways in the neighbourhood.

The famous Glacier Express stops in Chur on its way between St. Moritz and Zermatt. Rhatische Bahn has many interesting tracks, for example the journey up to Arosa.

The first part of the Bernina Express runs along the Rhine. Due to the strategic location of the valley, you will see plenty of old castles and ruins. Once out of the Rhine valley, the breathtaking mountain views begin. The tallest bridge is the Solis Bridge but the Landwasser Viaduct is better known. The latter has a length of 136 metres and a height of 65 metres. It has six arches and is slightly curved.

If you have time, you can stop in Filisur and take some photos of both the Landwasser Viaduct and the Wiesen Bridge, with 204 metres the longest stone bridge in Graubunden. For the Wiesen Bridge you can take the train towards Davos or walk to Wiesen.

It is 1.5-2 hour walk from Filisur, and you can walk across the Wiesen Bridge. The longest tunnel is the Albula tunnel (length 5865 metres) between Preda and Spinas. It was opened in 1903. At an altitude of 1883 metres it is the highest railway tunnel in the Alps.

In 1904 the railway connected St. Moritz with Chur. Before that the journey from Chur to St. Moritz took 15 hours by stagecoach. Thanks to the railway line, St. Moritz became an exclusive winter resort. The Bernina Express from Chur does not go to St. Moritz, you need to change trains in Samedan if you want to visit St. Moritz. It is possible to take a train from St. Moritz to Tirano, this was the original Bernina Line.

Ospozio Bernina, altitude of 2253 metres, is the highest point of the railway. The lake along this part of the track is Lago Bianco. On one side of the lake, the water flows via the river Inn and the Danube into the Black Sea and on the other side, the water flows via the river Adda and the Po into the Adriatic Sea.

In the Italian speaking part of the Bernina Express, the train sometimes uses the streets of the villages and looks more like a tram than a train. The famous 360 degree spiral viaduct, the Kreis Viaduct (9 arches and a length of 116 metres), in Brusio is used to overcome the height difference within a small distance. It is a very popular target for photographers.

Tirano is small town and most tourists either take the Bernina Express back to Chur or continue by Italian train to Milan (takes 2.5 hours) In summer, you can take the bus to Lugano, a 3 hour bus ride. Although not as spectacular as the Bernina Express, it is a nice bus ride. In Lugano, you can take another scenic train journey to Luzern.

As a worldly traveler, I’m happy to share all the ins and outs of the Eurail Pass – which continues to transport people of all ages throughout Europe. A Eurail Pass can really be considered an all access pass to the entire train network in select countries…and the best part…you get to choose the countries you would like to include. In fact, you have many options:

One Country Pass: Your Eurail Pass can be a simple one country pass, for let’s say Italy.Two Country Regional Pass: Or your Eurail Pass can be for two countries, like Austria and Germany.3-5 Country Select Pass: The Select Pass allows you to choose three to five neighboring countries for you Eurail Pass.22 Country Global Pass:The all-inclusive Global Pass, which allows for travel throughout 22 countries in Europe!

There really is a Eurail Pass to suit any European itinerary.

Once you’ve found the right Eurail Pass, you will be presented with a number of possible travel durations and validities. Depending on the Eurail Pass, there are often flexible or consecutive travel days offered. A good rule of thumb is:

Consecutive Pass: If you plan on being on the move, and traveling on trains almost daily, then a consecutive validity would be ideal, such as a Eurail Pass good for travel throughout 15 days. Flexipass:Whereas, if you plan on lingering for a few days in each destination, then a flexible validity would be best, such as 5 travel days to be used within 1 month.

Adult Saver Passes are great for groups of 2 to 5 people who plan on traveling together as each person saves 15% off the adult fare. Youth, between the ages of 12 and 25, get 35% savings off the adult fare in standard class. Children aged 4 to 11 get 50% offChildren under the age of 4 travel for free. Seniors over the age of 60 get a 15% discount on a few, albeit limited number of Eurail passes.

When it comes to using a Eurail Pass, here are some helpful hints to getting on board and enjoying a smooth ride.

Validate your pass

Be sure to validate your Eurail Pass within 6 months of the issuing date. Once in Europe, take your Eurail Pass to a train station ticket window, and a railway official will stamp it and fill in the first and last day of validity and your passport number. When traveling with a Flexi Eurail Pass, enter each travel date on the calendar on your pass before you board a train on that day. Flexible travel days may be used consecutively or non-consecutively, as long as they are used within the given timeframe.

Validating overnight trains

Here’s a helpful hint when traveling on an overnight train, thereby avoiding having to use up two travel days: if you take a direct overnight train that departs after 7:00 pm and arrives after 4:00 am, then you enter only the date of arrival.

Make seat reservations

Eurail Pass holders can usually just hop on the train and be on their way. However, there are some exceptions, where select trains require the passenger to pay a seat reservation or supplement. When checking timetables it will indicate if a train is subject to a compulsory reservation. The additional cost is not included in the Eurail Pass and varies depending on the country, type of train and date of purchase/travel. Here are some helpful guidelines: most international long-distance trains require a reservation, as well as various domestic high-speed trains. Night trains always require a supplement for sleeping accommodation. Seat reservations are not usually necessary for local or regional trains. Please note that on some trains (such as French TGV and Thalys and trains), the number of seats for Eurail Pass holders are limited. Therefore, you should reserve these trains in advance, especially in high-season. It is also recommended that you make reservations during peak travel periods, and if you must reach your destination at a specific time.

Travel light

One of the joys of traveling with a rail pass is to stay flexible so don’t let heavy luggage slow you down. Once on board, most trains have overhead compartments and luggage areas at the end of the car, where you can store your bags. For stop-overs, travelers will find the luggage lockers at most train stations, a useful place to keep luggage safe.
