HD Train Scenery from Zurich to St. Moritz Switzerland on Christmas Eve Day

A ride on Christmas eve day from Zurich to St. Moritz Switzerland has been really rich in variety and beauty. Ed Waldrup, an US-American tourist, made three HD videos of that rememberable train journey. Enjoy the ride!

Part 1: Zurich Airport to Chur Switzerland

Train ride from Zurich to Chur leads from the Zurich urban area straight to the mountain area of the Canton of Grison. A Canton in Switzerland is a political unit similar to a State in the USA. The trains run on standard gauge tracks with an inner width of 1’435 mm or 4ft 8 1/2 in. The trains on this railroad line are run by SBB (Schweizerische Bundesbahnen, in English Swiss Federal Railway). The train rides through the City of Zurich, along the Lake of Zurich, Lake Walensee with the Churfirsten mountains and the “Bündner Herrschaft” to Chur.  Enjoy the ride!

Part 2: From Chur to Bergün Switzerland

From Chur to St. Moritz Ed Waldrup, a well known and welcome US tourist, was travelling with the RhB (Rhätische Bahn, in English “Rhaetian Railway”) on narrow gauge track. The tracks of RhB is a meter gauge track with an inner width of 1’000 mm or 3 ft 3 3/8 in like most mountain railways in Switzerland. Approximately 7% of the world’s railways use meter gauge tracks (Wikipedia). As the journey from Chur to St. Moritz is quite long and the scenery magnificent, it is split in two parts, parts 2 & 3. Part 2 is dedicated to the section from Chur to Bergün.

Part 3: From Bergün to St. Moritz Switzerland

UNESCO World Heritage “Rhaetian Railway in the Albula Landscapes”

The Albula line of the RhB (Rhaetian Railway) is a genuine treasure, that has been approved as part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscapes” in the month of  July 2008. This approval as UNESCO World Heritage includes not just the railroad, but also the neighbouring countryside. Landscape and railway blend into one another in a number of imosing and wide expanses man-made historic structures, all watchfully embedded to the really steeply-sloping and narrow Alpine valleys. Man can not exist from the railroad alone, but they can put it to connect to the locatons that are worth visiting in 3  different cultural regions with three different mountain languages spoken. These attractions include such sights like the winding loop tunnels between the train stops of Bergün (1376 m / 4514ft 5 15/64 in) and Preda Station (1820 m / 5971ft 35/64 in).

Travel along the famous Albula line and see the Preda to Bergün Spiral tunnels area on this Unesco World Heritage route.

SWITZERLAND – Such convenient beauty

Grand Hotel Suisse MajesticArticle by Kristel Van Winkel

PROBLEM NUMBER ONE for incentive planners going to Switzerland – perhaps the only problem Switzerland poses for organisers – is what to offer participants as gifts. Not so much what can offer that will give pleasure but what will everyone want as a reminder of their visit.

A few pounds of chocolates or cheese will be welcome, of course. Switzerland’s chocolates and cheeses are superb. A few pounds of gold, or at least a few ounces, in the form of jewellery or a watch from one of the fine shops in Zurich’s glorious Bahnhofstrasse or Geneva’s Old Town would not go amiss either.

But many participants will most want to take home something much more expensive and difficult to handle, beginning with an airport or two. The reason is that flying into Geneva and Zurich remains one of the few pleasures in modern travel. First travel is the beauty of their locations in the heart of the mountains and the lakes. As the aircraft descends, the spirits soar – everyone knows they are going to have a good time.

Then there is the convenience of the airports themselves. Not merely the fact that they are relatively small and superbly equipped with everything from supermarkets to conference suites but that they are directly linked to Switzerland’s extraordinary rail service. Within a few minutes of landing, everyone can be on board and well on their way to some remote Alpine village.

Inevitably people will be saying, I wish we had an airport like that at home! Not all Swiss cities offer this same immediate air-to-rail link, but that’s only because their airports are even smaller and their settings possibly even more beautiful.

What would be the point of getting straight on a train when you land, say at Bern, in the midst of immaculate rolling farmland, or at Lugano, by the lake and its surrounding palm trees?

So an airport should be on every incentive planners’ shopping shortlist in Switzerland. So should a mountain or two.

Yes, it is difficult to see how everyone will be able to take the Matterhorn of the Jungfrau home, but you can be certain they will want to. The reason is that Switzerland’s mountains are better than anyone else’s. They are not merely high masses of inanimate granite. They are decorated with pine forests and tiny glittering waterfalls and brilliant white snow and fairytale chalets and picture postcard cattle, until they are unbelievable beautiful.

Hotel Video. Starring the 14-times world champion of tap-dance Fabrice Martin with Katia D’Angelo.

That’s their secret. They are so beautiful that one wants to touch them, to make sure they are real, and then, of course, to take them home.

Fortunately for planners, mountains are everywhere in Switzerland – it is literally impossible to go anywhere without seeing them – and perhaps the local folk might not even notice if one of two went missing. A couple of other interesting items to consider buying are: efficiency, for once participants experience the reliable nature of Switzerland they are sure to want to take that with them; and hotels, since Switzerland more or less invented luxury hostel-keeping and everyone is going to want one of these chic establishments for their own exclusive use back home.
