Zurich Old Town Video Tour – St. Peter Chruch

Zurich Old Town and St. Peter

St. Peter

Next to the Lindenhof hill, site of the former Roman castle, a temple to Iuppiter was built on the site of todays St. Peter Church. An early small church is archaeologically attested for the 9th century. This first old chruch was replaced by a romanesque church around AD 1000.  1230 it was replaced by an other romanesque structure. Parts of the 1230 building survive. 1460 the nave was reconstructed in Gothic style. Prior to the reformation, St. Peter was the only parish church of the town, the rest being part of monasteries. St. Peter is one of the four protestant churches that are dominating the Zurich old town.

15 Minutes to walk from one end of the town to the other – this strongly depends on your definition of ‘end of town’. If you walk from the outer end of Schwamendingen to the outer end of Altstetten, it MIGHT just take you a bit more than 15 minutes :)
You probably meant the town centre. ;)

Oh, and another thing, is it just me or did you miss the universities, the ETH and the UZH? These are nice buildings, too :)

Well done and well commented! Of course, there are many more nice places and things to see in Zurich. Example: the “Oepfelchammer”. Built in 1357 and used as some kind of pub since 1801. You can actually touch wooden beams from the 1300′s. They also play a funny drinking game there. If you successfully drink a glass of wine hanging from one of these old wodden beams, you can carve your name into the wood. Just look on YouTube for “balkenprobe”.
